I am the CTO at the Capital Markets CRC in beautiful Sydney. We are conducting leading-edge R&D in real-time security market surveillance. We work with several high profile international innovators who are the world leaders in real-time security market surveillance. With our key partners we also work with 37 national exchanges and regulators and 150 brokers across 30 countries. We are addressing key issues affecting the integrity of the world's securities markets and are looking at a variety of technology that can help us solve the problems in this space including machine learning, text mining (text analytics), data mining, management and scalability. We're also working on correlations between textual information and market behavior, both for surveillance and predictive capabilities.

I am actively seeking new Hons and PhD students to work with the CMCRC. We have the most generous scholarships available in Australia! And they are open to international students. The scholarships are very competitive so I am only interested in hearing from you if you have a first class honours degree in computing (or equvalent) from a top university with an average grade over 80%. We are currently looking for students who want to apply text analytics to securities market surveillance, modelling and/or predication. We have a strong record of creating profitable spin-off companies in this space with students learning about commercialisation and participating directly in share schemes. The most active students have the opportunity to become founding members of such spin-off companies.

I am affiliated with the Centre for Language Technology in the Department of Computing, Macquarie University. I like to work in the intersection between research and the real world.

Before coming here, I worked in HCRC/ICCS in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh (my homepage there).

I have a very wide range of research interests, but they are mostly centered around language technology (particularly text analytics or information extraction), adaptivity and educational psychology.
