Optical fibre lasers have developed considerably in the last 10 years, and in some cases now compete with bulk and semiconductor sources in a number of applications, including sensing and fundamental research. These developments have been assisted by developments in optical fibre technologies, such as optical fibre amplifiers and in-fibre grating filters.
