Guided Wave Optics & Photonics Research
Biophotonics
Applications of photonics in biomedicine is a rapidly growing field,
with applications in both diagnosis and surgery. Two particular areas of
interest relevant to diagnostic applications of photonics are as
follows;
- Imaging
Broadband light can be used to image the human body with very high
resolution, however a significant problem is the highly scattering
nature of biological tissue at optical wavelengths. The aim of this
project is to investigate novel imaging techniques using optical fibre
technology and specialised signal processing techniques.
- Sensing
The interaction of light with matter can be used to measure physical
and chemical properties of biological tissue. The aim of this project
is to investigate minimally invasive techniques to measure important
biological compounds using photonic technology and specialised signal
processing techniques.
