This unit is intended to introduce you to the area of speech recognition. The overall goal is that you understand enough about the underlying processes in a recogniser and about the structure of spoken language that you can make effective use of ASR systems and perhaps contribute to improve their inner workings.
These notes are intended to guide you through the unit and will be suplemented by copies of papers and book chapters as appropriate. You might notice that in places they seem cobbled together which is not surprising since they are (from SLP801 and SLP806 offered last year in the MSc Speech and Language Processing).
