Updates 4th July: My PhD-thesis entitled: Play Story - Communication, Character and Gaming Experiences Across Platforms in Multi-Player Role-Playing Games is nearing completion. After two years and six months, the last papers have been submitted for review, the introduction and perspectives written and the acknowledgements made. It is a beast of a thesis - 14 professional papers make up the bulk of the contents, and it is therefore a thesis by publication. The contents cover RPG theory, communication in multi-player games, character-player relationships, game design and more. For more info, follow the red link below. 29th June: Looks like we have finally managed to get the new International Journal of Role Playing board and website organised. The CFP is ready, and as soon as my partner-in-crime Dr. Marinka Copier finalizes the website the IJRP will finally, after more than a year in birthing, be realized. It is going to be very interesting to see if the journal takes flight, however, recent industry and research interest in role playing games seems to indicate this. 28th June: I just submitted a new paper: Player Talk - The Functions of Communication in Multi-Player Role-Playing Games, with Jonas Heide-Smith from The ITU Center for Computer Games Research. It is a whopping mother of a manuscript. 14,500 words hard-packed with statistical data on why and how players of RPGs communicate, and how their communication differs across digital and tabletop platforms.
