TAFE Pathways
This page provides information for students wishing to study in the Division and to obtain credit for previous TAFE study. At present formal arrangements only exist for study in the Information Technology (IT) area and the relevant information is detailed on this page. Students in other areas are encouraged to contact an academic advisor.
What do you get?
If you have a TAFE diploma in a related field of study, Macquarie University will give you credit towards your degree. Holding a TAFE diploma will mean that you get 24 credit points, which is credit equal to 33% of a three year degree. However, that may or may not mean that you only have to complete 66% of the standard degree program.
While you will always be given the credits from your TAFE diploma, there are still core units that must be completed to finish your degree. You will be given exemptions for some of these core units, if you've studied similar topics in your tafe diploma. Wherever possible, the university will try to give students the maximum amount of unit exemptions. In some cases this may depend on whether or not you have completed certain elective modules within your diploma. If you don't get all the exemptions, then your degree may or may not take longer than the minimum time listed below.
How long will my degree take?
You may be able to complete your degree in less than three years if you are granted excemptions from Macquarie units. Note that even if you get the maximum credit, and so only have to do 66% of a degree, it may take longer than two years to complete, due to having to take units in a specified sequence.
If you are unsure, you can always talk to an academic advisor.
How to use this page
Look below for your TAFE diploma. If you hold one of the diplomas listed then you can check the table to see for what units you can get credit. If your diploma is in Information Technology, but is not list, you will need to consult an academic advisor.
Click on the link below for your TAFE diploma to check if you are eligible for an exemption for any or all of the listed core units. The tables list the core and elective TAFE modules that we consider equivalent to our units; if you have done all of these modules you won't have to do the corresponding Macquarie unit. Note that some of the required TAFE modules are electives rather than core to the given Diploma. If you don't have all of these TAFE modules but you still think you have covered the material in one of our units you will need to be assessed individually during enrollment.
