For Staff

When committing to take on a Postgraduate Research student, you need to think at least four years into the future. You need to be able to provide adequate supervision during the full term of the student's candidature. The associate supervisor should also have knowledge in the research area and not just be someone who can sign paperwork.

You need to consider what resources the student will need and whether or not you already have access to those resources. If not, you need to obtain the necessary funding for the resources or arrange access to them. Examples might be access to outside laboratories for research visits, external supervision (associate supervisor), cost of specialist equipment, software, or other expenses that may not be covered under the guidelines of your grant or ICS PGRF. The distinction between department-specific resources, what can be funded through ICS PGRF and what is not covered by either is not always clear. If in doubt, you should discuss these issues with you Head of Department and the ICS Student Services Team.
