Title: Evaluating Embodied Conversational Agents
Speaker: Mary Ellen Foster, Technical University of Munich
Evaluating the quality of automatically-generated output is known to
be a difficult task: since generation is an open-ended task, the
criteria for success can be hard to define. In this talk, I will
describe several studies which aim to evaluate the behaviour of
embodied conversational agents and to compare the predictions of
automated evaluation techniques to the preferences of human users. The
first set of studies focus on the non-verbal behaviour of an animated
agent in the context of a recommender-style dialogue system. The final
study aims to evaluate the output generated by a humanoid robot while
cooperating with users on a mutual task.
