Using a Graph Grammar for NLG
Graph Grammars are considered as an extension of Context Free Grammars (CFG) and they are intensively investigated in theoretical computer science. They are used to map or to rewrite structured objects whereas CFG are used to map from strings to structured objects.
The need to process structured objects in the area of text generation is outstanding, since in contrast to parsing, the first step is usually to map a knowledge representation, e.g. a semantic structure, into a syntactic structure. It is also needed in the case of multistrata linguistic theories for instance in Meaning-Text Theory (MTT) which has actually seven strata ranging from a semantic level up to phonological levels.
The talk will introduce a Graph Grammar from a practical perspective and some of its possible applications for NLG. It will conclude with a demo of a development environment for linguistic resources which is based on this Graph Grammar.
