Text and Dialog Management in Interactive Drama: The Case of IDtension

Interactive Drama (ID) aims at providing a new kind of experience to a user,
where s/he could play the main character in a drama. The challenge is to
allow the user to deeply modify the course of the story, while maintaining
the narrative nature of the experience.

ID involves several research areas such as Intelligent Agents, Virtual
Reality, AI, Narratology and NLP. We are building software for ID, based on
a modeling of narrative, in order to combine interactivity and narrativity.

This research tackles several issues related to NLP that we would like to
discuss:

- How the user should enter linguistic commands to his/her character
(free speech, free text, button based interface, etc.)?

- How the author could enter the textual content in the ID, without
being required to learn computational linguistics?

- What kind of dialog management system is suited to complement the
drama engine?
