Title: The Generation of Referring Expressions: A Review

In this talk, I'll be sketching the outline and content of an article I am
writing for the Encyclopaedia of Language and Linguistics on 'The Generation
of Referring Expressions'.  I'll start with a definition and scope of the
problem as it is traditionally conceived, and review the main areas of
development that have been undertaken since the early work in this area in
the 1980s; I'll end by pointing to where I think future work needs to be
done.
