Title: Answer me exactly.
Abstract:
One thing is to find a piece of text that contains the answer to an
arbitrary question, another very different thing is to find the exact
answer. The evaluation-based Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) has a
question-answering track and its evaluation criteria is very strict and
somewhat arbitrary: the string "the river Mississippi" is not an exact
answer to "what is the longest river in the United States" because the
word "river" is not part of the name. However, the string "the
Mississippi River" is an exact answer.
In this talk I will review current approaches to select the answer
string and I'll present the current proposal for our entry to TREC 2004.
Part of the presentation will be based on Echihabi et al's draft book
chapter "How to Select an Answer String?":
