Abstract

Identity-related fraud is the fastest growing crime in the world. Last year, the Australian Institute of Criminology estimated ID fraud cost the Australian economy well over $6 billion. Indeed the Office of Strategic Crime Assessment concluded that "critical to the functioning of the economy is the requirement that stronger systems of proof of identity are developed".

In this presentation, Dr. Clive Summerfield, Adjunct Professor of Computing at Canberra University and founder of specialist consulting firm 3SH, will discuss the application of biometric technologies for confirming that a person is "who they claim to be".

The presentation will summarise the benefits and draw-backs of different biometric technologies, including accuracy and user acceptance, and discuss the application of biometrics as a replacement for passwords, PINs and Smartcard systems for security and identity management. As well as discussing implementation frameworks, Dr Summerfield will also review privacy consideration users need to keep in mind when deploying biometric solutions. The presentation will conclude with a review of a number of cases studies; including summary business cases, typical returns on investment and users experience in deploying biometric technologies.
