Speaker: Robert Dale
Title: What's in a Name?

Abstract:
In this talk, I'll present some of our recent work on the GainSpring
project, focussing specifically on the task of named entity recognition.
In some regards this is a follow-on from Lily's talk on cross-document
coreference of a couple of weeks ago; I'll explain some of the background
to the project and describe the ongoing design and refinement of our
architecture and strategies for detecting and categorising named entities
in company announcements. My intention is to cover both theoretical
aspects of handling named entities and implementational aspects of
building effective systems.

The talk is intended to serve a number of purposes: one the one hand I'm
using it to encourage me to refine some outstanding design questions in
the GainSpring system, but it also serves as preparation for part of a
lecture series I'll be giving in Manila in mid-May, and as something of an
early dry run for a talk to be given at the Open Publish conference in
Sydney in July. Feedback and discussion will be much appreciated.
