Title:Automatic Paraphrase Acquisition

Abstract:
I'll be talking about the ARC grant proposal I put in this year on automatic paraphrase acquisition, along with some of the background work by other people that leads up to it. The idea is to develop techniques for automatically determining which constructions are alternative valid ways of expressing the same content, typically through statistical approaches over corpora of related documents; the most interesting (I
think) work recently has been done by Regina Barzilay and others, which has arisen out of multi-document summarisation at Columbia Univ, where it's necessary to identify which sentences in parallel texts are saying the same thing.

So I'll talk about Regina's and related work, and then what I'm interested in looking at.
