Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Future Technology
Speaker: Professor Patrick Doherty, Linköping University, Sweden
Venue/date: Wednesday 2-3 pm Dec 12th, E6A 102 (Macquarie University)
Followed by Tea & Discussion in E6A level 3 tearoom
Abstract: Due to technological advances and increasing investment, interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a practical, deployable technological component in many civil applications is rapidly increasing and becoming a reality, as are their capabilities and availability. UAV platforms also offer a unique experimental environment for developing, integrating and experimenting with many artificial intelligence technologies such as automated planners, knowledge representation systems and chronicle recognition systems. In this talk I will describe some of the work being pursued at Linköping University, Sweden in this area. Focus will be placed on integration of artificial intelligence technologies in such systems in the context of civil
and commercial applications. A number of UAV systems developed and deployed by our research group for sophisticated experimental application scenarios will be demonstrated. Challenges and prospects for future UAV systems will also be highlighted.
Speaker Bio: Patrick Doherty is a Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computer
and Information Sciences (IDA), Linköping University, Sweden. He heads the Artificial
Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems Division at IDA, and is also director of
LinkLab, a research center for future aviation systems at Linköping in partnership with
Saab. He is an ECCAI fellow and has published numerous articles in the areas of
knowledge representation, automated planning, and autonomous UAV systems.

ICS Division-wide Colloquia series
Towards a Quantum Technology Industry
Wednesday 12-1 pm July 11th, E6A 102 (Followed by Tea & Discussion in E6A level 3 tearoom)
Speaker: Dr William Munro, Principal Research Scientist/Master Technologist, Hewlett Packard Labs, Bristol, UK
This is the inaugural lecture in a new Division-wide Colloquia series hosted by the Dean of ICS. This event is open to all within the Division and externally. The series aims to strengthen research collaborations and communicate with the broader community, both internally and externally to the ICS Division.
Research Student Seminar Series
Do you remember what it was that first drew you to science and engineering? The excitement of discovery, the challenge of invention, understanding the unknown.
Do you feel as if the day to day grind and detail of research has dulled the excitement?
The ICS Postgraduate Research Student Seminar Series is designed to give you an exciting glimpse into the research happening at Macquarie, without burdening you with cumbersome technical details. Presentations are accessable to everyone.
