Varadharajan
Vijay Varadharajan
is the Professor and Microsoft Chair in Innovation in Computing at Macquarie University. He is also the Director of Information
and Networked System Security Research.( http://www.comp.mq.edu.au/research/inss/
)
Previous to this,
he was the Foundation Professor and Chair of Computing and IT at the University
of Western Sydney, Australia, from Jan.1995 till
Feb.2001. He was also the Head of School of Computing and IT at University of Western Sydney,
Nepean and the
Director of the Distributed System and Network Security Research. Prior to
taking up this appointment, Professor Varadharajan was responsible for
worldwide Security Research at corporate Hewlett-Packard Labs based in Europe
at HP Labs.,UK.
He has worked also with various HP Divisions in the US, UK,
Germany, France and Italy. He has been with HP since
1988. Prior to HP, he was a Research Manager at British Telecom Research Labs.
U.K (1987-88). From 1985 till 1987, he was Research Fellow and Lecturer in
Computer Science at Plymouth and Reading Universities. He did his Ph.D in
Computer and Communication Security in the U.K (1981-1984) from Plymouth and Exeter
Universities in U.K., which was
sponsored by BT Research Labs. He did his Electronic Engineering degree from Sussex University, UK (1978-1981). He has won several
awards and was awarded the Best Student in Each Year of the Degree Program at Sussex University.
He was also awarded the 1981 Prize of the Institution of Electrical Engineers,
IEE, for outstanding performance at Sussex
University and the
Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals Award (UK).
From 1995-98, he
has continued research work with HP (USA) and was invited Senior Research
Scientist at Microsoft Research Cambridge UK in 1999-2000. He was invited as
a Senior Research Scientist at Fujitsu Research Labs, Japan in 2001.
In 2001, he was invited as a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Mathematical
Sciences at National University of Singapore. In
2002, he was appointed as the Invited Professor at French National Research
Labs (INRIA). In 2003, he was Invited Professor at the Indian Inst. of
Technology Roorkee and Nanjing
University, China.
In 2004, he was invited as a Senior Research Scientist at Microsoft Research
Cambridge, UK and in 2005 he was appointed as a
Invited Fellow at British Telecom Labs, UK. He was the Technical Board
Director of Computer Science at Australian Computer Society (1999-2006). He has
been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy
of Sciences (2006-2008). He has been a member of the Board of Studies NSW
Australian Government since 2005. He was on the Board of International Advisors
of TCPA, USA,
originally formed by HP, Microsoft, Intel, Sun and Compaq. TCPA security
specification is currently being used by numerous companies (over 200) to
develop new products. In 2002, he has been recognized appointed to Trustworthy
Computing Board (Microsoft,
USA). He
continues to be on this Microsoft Advisory Board TCAAB since that time. He is
also Adjunct Professor at the University
of Western Sydney.
Professor
Varadharajan has technically led, managed and successfully delivered on
numerous R&D projects in Secure Systems and Networks Technology funded by
European Commission, Hewlett-Packard Labs., SERC/EPSRC and British Telecom
Labs. in the UK
and USA,
and Australian Research Council Grants and University Grants as well as
sponsored projects from Fujitsu, Microsoft and other industries. In Australia his
work has funded by several Government Agencies including the Defense Signals
Directorate (DSD), Dept of Prime Minister and Cabinet Office (PMC), DCITA and
NOIE. He has also acted as consultant and has been architect for several
projects in computing, financial and telecom organizations in the UK, US and more recently in Australia. He
has also acted as an Expert for European Union and worked with the UK Dept. of
Trade and Industry, and has worked several European Union Research Projects
such as COST, EUREKA and ESPRIT. Professor Varadharajan has also been a member
of several International Standards activities such as ISO, ECMA, OSF,
CCITT/ITU, IEEE, British and Australian Standards and the European Union. He is
also the Australian Delegate on IFIP Technical Committee TC 11 on Information
Security. Other roles have included Member of International Research Advisory
Board (IRAB), DSTC CRC (1995, 2001), Member of Office of Information Technology
IT Committee, NSW State Govt., Office of Information Technology, and Member of
Greater Western Sydney Economic Development Board IT Committee.
Professor
Varadharajan has published more than 275 papers in International Journals and
Conferences, has co-authored and edited 8 books on Information Technology,
Security, Networks and Distributed Systems and holds 4 patents. His research
work over the years has contributed to the development of several successful
secure commercial systems in the areas of Secure Distributed Applications,
Secure Network Systems, Security Tools, Secure Mobile Systems as well as
Cryptographic and Smart Card based Systems. His current areas of research
interest include Web Services Security, Secure Distributed Applications,
Trusted Computing, Security Policies and Management in Distributed Systems,
Internet Security, Secure Mobile Agents, Security in Mobile Networks, Wireless
Security, Secure E-Commerce, Security Policies, Models and Architectures and
Protocols.
He
has been a member of the Board of Advisors in Trusted Computing Platform
Association (TCPA) and is on the Microsoft Trustworthy Computing Academic
Advisory Board (TCAAB). He has been an invited Visiting Professor at INRIA
Research Labs in France, Institute of Mathematical
Sciences, National University of Singapore, Indian Institute of Science and Visiting Scientist at
Microsoft Research Cambridge, UK. He is an Editorial Board member of several
journals including the prestigious ACM Transactions on Information System
Security (USA), Journal of Information Security, Springer (Germany), and
Computer and Communication Security Reviews (UK). He has been nominated to be
on the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure
Computing (TDSC). He has given over 15 keynote speeches at international
conferences, and has been a program committee member/chaired over 150
international conferences all over the world. These include prestigious
international conferences such as IEEE S&P, ACM CCS, IEEE ACSAC, ESORICS
and NDSS. He has been Program & General Chair of several international
conferences including IEEE/IFIP DSOM, ACM AsiaCCS, ICPP/ISW, ICICS, Healthcom, and APNOMS, and will be the
Program Co-Chair of AsiaCCS in 2009.
He is a Fellow of
the British Computer Society (FBCS), a Fellow of the IEE (FIEE), a Fellow of
the IMA (FIMA), a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Engineers (FIEAust), a
Fellow of the Australian Computer Society (FACS).
