ICS APAI Biochemistry/Microbiology Automated pathogen detection using time-gated luminescence microscopy PhD Scholarship

Macquarie University, Olympus Australia and Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Westmead Hospital have successfully gained funding under the ARC Linkage Program to support a project aimed initially at the rapid detection of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA).

The project will study approaches to conjugating antibodies and DNA probes with novel luminescent fluorophores for computer-assisted microscopy analysis using time-gated luminescence microscopy (TGLM) to suppress autofluorescence and permit the rapid detection of labeled organisms in-situ.

It is hoped protocols will be developed to facilitate rapid, culture free assay for detecting low levels of respiratory pathogens such as MRSA.
