Laser written waveguides for use in all-optical data networks
[The Laser Writing Team includes Graham Marshall, Martin Ams, Michael Withford, Alex Fuerbach, Nem Jovanovic, Jim Piper, Judith Dawes, Doug Little and Ben Johnston]
About the project
Australians are familiar with the current availability of 3D images inside blocks of glass, inscribed within using high power lasers. Sophisticated variations of those methods can also be used to write 3D features inside the glass that guide and manipulate light on microscopic scale. These features can act as the optical equivalent to electronics and its building block, the silicon chip, namely photonics and integrated lightwave circuits. In this project advanced direct write methods will be developed using ultrafast laser that enable lightwave circuits to be inscribed inside bulk glass for improved data communications in metropolitan area networks.
