Projects Overview for CUDOS @ Macquarie

Following is an overview of our current and past projects.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

Integrated Optics and Photonic Devices

1. Femtosecond laser direct writing of waveguides in doped glasses. [Martin Ams - PhD commenced in 2002].

2. Development of a scanning near field probe for mapping photonic crystal circuits. [Doug Little - PhD commenced in 2005].

3. Laser written waveguides for use in all-optical data networks [Graham Marshall and the Laser Writing team]

4. Generation and application of high-energy femtosecond laser pulses with MHz repetition rates. [Christopher Miese - PhD commenced in 2008].

Laser Development

1. Development of fibre laser based pump source's for a femtosecond laser system. [Nemanja Jovanovic - PhD commenced in 2006].

2. High-energy femtosecond oscillator. [Alex Fuerbach - commenced in 2005].

Nanophotonics

1. Propagation and amplification of surface plasmons in nanowires. [Jacek Gosciniak - PhD commenced in 2008].

Photonic Materials

1. Novel techniques for fabricating periodically poled lithium niobate. [Ben Johnston - PhD commenced in 2004].

2. Functionalising Self-Assembled Photonic Crystals. [Luke Stewart - PhD commenced in 2005].

3. Artificial Opals for Photonic Crystal Devices. [Sara Ek - MPhil commenced in 2007].

Development of Photonics for Astronomical Instrumentation

1. Development of fibre tapers to be used as adiabatic mode transformers in astronomical instrumentation. [Dionne Haynes - MSc commenced 2006].

2. Temporal astronomy using Fibre Bragg gratings. [Nick Cvetojevic - Hons commenced 2008].
