Theory of non-reciprocal magneto-optical photonic microstructures

Supervisor: Mike Steel

Materials with a magneto-optical response have interesting non-reciprocal properties where propagation in one direction is different in character to reverse propagation. There is a close connection with time-reversal symmetry breaking. By incorporating magneto-optical materials into resonant microstructures such as photonic crystals, the non-reciprocal effects can be enhanced allowing more compact and more functional devices. This theoretical project will involve a mix of analytic and numerical work in studying new geometries and devices for magneto-optical microstructures, and extending the underlying theory of the subject.
