Connecting to Staff Network Printers
Microsoft Windows
This procedure is based on Windows XP. Other Windows versions are similar.
- Select Start -> "Printers and Faxes"
- Select "Add a printer". The Add Printer Wizard starts...
- Click Next.
- Select Network Printer and click Next.
- Select the second item "Connect to this printer..." (leave field blank) and click Next.
After a short delay a list of computers is displayed in the "Shared printers" list box.
NOTE: If you do not get a listing of computers, then click the "<Back" button and explicitly enter the name of the printer in the blank field (ie: \\GUTENBERG\e6a348-zebra). Go to step 8. - Open ICS, find and double click on GUTENBERG.
- Find and select the desired printer and click Next.
- Select Yes if you want this printer to be the default printer.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
Right click the printer and select "Properties" to change printer settings if necessary. Some options cannot be changed.
Connecting via Unix / Mac OS X
If you are using a Unix or Mac OS X based operating system, then you should use LPR printing. Go to Apple -> System Preferences -> Printers & Faxes and add a new printer. Protocol should be set to LPD and address to "printers.ics.mq.edu.au" and the queue name to the name of the printer (usually room_location-printer_name ie: e6a348-zebra). Name should be set to the same as queue name, location to the location of the printer. Select Print Using and select the correct HP printer model and select Add. Chose the appropriate installable options.
Connecting via Wireless
Please note that there are a lot of unresolved issues with IPP printing and your success will vary. IPP printing is not as reliable as printing via a wired connection. The url is
- http://gutenberg.ics.mq.edu.au/printers/ for staff printers
- http://support.ics.mq.edu.au/printers/ for student printers
Another option to print using wireless is to set up VPN client according to the instruction here, then you can simply follow the instruction above (Microsoft Windows).
