Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA)
Under MSDNAA agreement, Microsoft makes software available to COMP / ICS for use in instruction and for noncommercial research use only. The use of the software is subject to the MSDN End User License Agreement (ELUA) and the MSDNAA License Agreement.
Computing Technical Services (CTS / ICS) is responsible for administration, management and enforcing the conditions of the agreement. The software includes most Microsoft packages with the exception of Microsoft Office products. A limited subset of Office products are available: (Project, Visio, Access).
Students who are taking at least one for credit course may download and install the software on their personal computers. Students are restricted to noncommercial use of the software. Because of time limits, CTS / ICS does not make available all of the possible software packages.
Access to Software
The software is managed through the MSDNAA E-Academy License Management System (ELMS) web site:
http://msdn70.e-academy.com/au_37774
Details of eligible students are loaded onto the site by CTS / ICS. This document will use the example of a student with a Macquarie University Student Id of 12345678 and an email address 12345678@students.mq.edu.au
The email for the address can be read by going to http://my.mq.edu.au

and login using your MyMQ username and password.
When the details for student 12345678 are loaded into the ELMS web site an email is sent to 12345678@students.mq.edu.au with the account name, password and the URL of the ELMS web site.
The email would contain:

The available software is listed with the icons in the bottom half of the web page. This software is available by download only. These are example documents showing how to download and burn to CD-ROM for:
Visual Studio 2005 Pro (CD1, CD2 and MSDN Library CD1, 2, 3) Download: Visual Studio 2005 Pro
Burn CD-ROM: Burn CD-ROM Visual Studio 2005 Pro
Burn DVD: Burn DVD Visual Studio 2005 Pro
Install DVD: Install DVD Visual Studio 2005 Pro
Windows XP Pro
Download: <use as an example:Visual Studio 2005 Pro>
Burn ISO CD-ROM: Burn ISO Image File to CD-ROM
Where to Download
There are some “Short-Stay” computers installed in the E6A Level 1 Computing Labs. These computers have a 1GBit Ethernet connection and a DVD / CD-ROM burner. The DVD / CD-ROM burner software is Nero.
You cannot use the Macquarie University Wireless network to do the download. You can use your system at home if it has a sufficiently fast connection to the internet. A 56kbs connection is not sufficient.
The Visual Studio packages are typically a set of 5 CD-ROM. This will require the transfer of about 5 x 600MB of data. In most cases the software has to be installed from CD-ROM. The installer knows that the install is from a CD-ROM and will ask the user to insert the next disk. See Burn DVD Visual Studio 2005 Pro for details on how to create the Visual Studio 2005 Pro DVD structure.
If the install is done from Hard Disc with just the CD-ROM structures then the installer does not ask for the next CD-ROM and fails to find the file set on the next CD-ROM.
