Getting to and from Townsville

Townsville has an international-standard airport and is situated 5 kms west from the city centre.  Townsville airport has daily flights between Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney and connecting flights to all other major cities.  It also has flights to regional areas in Queensland, such as Cairns, Gladstone, Rockhampton and Mackay.

 

On arrival simply take a cab for a five-minute trip to the heart of the city to any of the nominated conference hotels and Southbank Convention Centre..

 

On arrival you can also hire a car or 4WD to discover the amazing sites of the Wet Tropics or historic Charters Towers; book a ferry to magnificent Magnetic Island.

Climate

The Townsville Region is characterised by its dry tropical climate, with distinct wet and dry seasons.

Townsville experiences an average daily maximum temperature of 28.8°C and an average daily minimum temperature of 19.7°C. December is the warmest month of the year with daily maximum temperatures averaging 31.4°C and daily minimum temperatures averaging 24.0°C. July is the coolest month with daily maximum temperatures averaging 25.0°C and daily minimum temperatures averaging 13.5°C.

Townsville’s weather pattern is dominated by the two seasons of a short wet summer with considerable rainfall and a relatively long dry period for the remainder of the year. The average rainfall ranges from 2571 millimetres at Paluma to 1136 millimetres at Townsville City to 853 millimetres at Woodstock.

A high level of solar radiation is a specific feature of the climate. Townsville experiences an annual average of 8.4 hours of sunshine per day with October having the most average hours of sunshine at 9.7 hours per day. February experiences the least average hours of sunshine at 7.2 hours per day (unpublished data, Bureau of Meteorology, Townsville Office 2002).
